Sara Atkins Obituary

Sara McIntyre Atkins, 86, passed away Thursday, April 11, 2024 at her residence.

A funeral service will be held Sunday, April 14, 2024 at 4:00 p.m. at Love Joy Church, officiated by Rev. Casey Harris and Rev. Ron Scott. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church.

Born August 7, 1937, in Richmond County, she was the daughter of the late Henry Lee McIntyre and Roberta Poe McIntyre.  As a dedicated wife and mother, Sara's family was the center of her world. She poured her love into every aspect of family life, creating a warm and welcoming home where laughter, love, and traditions were always abundant. Sara's passion for cooking and canning was evident in the delicious meals she prepared three times a day.

With a green thumb and a love for the outdoors, she tended to her garden and yard with great care. Sara was a member of Love Joy Church, and she often helped make quilts for the church auction.

Sara also found joy in shopping and looking for unique pottery items. She loved her family and was the epitome of a Southern lady.

She was very proud of what she and her late husband had accomplished in establishing their farm which had received many accolades through the years and continued managing the farm after the passing of her husband in 2012.

She is survived by her daughters, Sherron Harris (Ken), Ronda Haywood (Billy), Cynthia Ziccarelli (Alan); son, Dereck Atkins, all of Troy; grandchildren, Josh Harris (Tiffany), Sara Harris Ceneskie (Eric), Austin Harris (Stephanie), Ana Haywood Rich (John), Meredith Haywood Walker (Jonathan), Ivy Ziccarelli Brown ( Ryan ), Casey Ziccarelli Schertzinger (Landon), Courtney Atkins (Richard Capel), and Garrett Atkins; great-grandchildren, Sawyer and Harris Ceneskie, Elania and Aloura Harris, Daxton and Paisley Harris, Lennox and Barrett Rich, Easton and Cash Walker, McKellar, Watson, and Graham Brown, Knox and Hudson Schertzinger, and Connor Capel; and siblings, Edith Atkins of Troy, Robbie Gibson of Ellerbe and Van McIntyre of Pekin. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Ray Atkins; and her siblings, Harvey McIntyre, Claude McIntyre, Frank McIntyre, Ralph McIntyre, and Jane Kearns.

A special thank you to caregiver, Lois McCaskill, who attended to Sara’s every need and was a special friend to her and the family.
