Sandra Kay (Lucas) Gooch

April 16, 1945 — August 16, 2025

Troy

Sandra Kay Lucas Gooch passed away on August 16, 2025, at her residence in Troy, North Carolina. She was born April 16, 1945, in Montgomery County to Raymond and Lois Saunders Lucas. Sandra was a beacon of love and faith throughout her 80 years of life.

A funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Uwharrie Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. William Saunders. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at 6:00-8:00 pm Monday, August 18, 2025, at Bumgarner Family Funeral Service.

Sandra was the cherished wife of Richard Wayne Gooch, with whom she shared a beautiful and enduring partnership of 60 years. Together, they raised a family that was the center of her world. She was a devoted mother to her daughter, Andrea Gooch Krell (David) of Matthews, North Carolina, and to her son, Nathan Gooch (Amy) of Troy, North Carolina. Sandra's joy was multiplied with the birth of her grandchildren, Evan, Jason, John Carter, and Caroline, to whom she was an adoring grandmother. She is also survived by her sister, Carolyn Lucas Baker (Lt. Col. Charles) of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Linda Lucas Parker.

Sandra was a proud graduate of the West Montgomery High School class of 1963, and worked as an X-Ray Technician at Randolph Hospital for 27 years before retiring in 2009. Her faith was an integral part of her life, and she was a dedicated member of Uwharrie Methodist Church. She was an avid crossword and Sudoku puzzle enthusiast; in her younger years, she and Richard were competitive bowlers in a couple’s league in Asheboro. They also square danced with the Montogomery Twirlers throughout the 1970s and 1980s, and she enjoyed the Gooch Family's fall beach fishing trips (from the comfort of the cab of Richard’s pickup truck). Sandra relished the opportunity to take her grandchildren on “mini-vacations”: places like Dan Nicholas Park, Town Creek Indian Mound, and always a trip to the dollar store and Sir Pizza.

A lover of nature, Sandra found pleasure in watching her hummingbirds flutter around the feeders on her front porch, and she spent many contented hours throughout the years with her beloved pets Rascal, Harry and Emmitt, Gracie, and Patches. She lived her days with a kind heart and an unwavering commitment to her family and faith. Sandra’s life was an example of one well-lived, and she will be dearly missed.

In honor of Sandra the family requests attendee’s wear pink for breast cancer awareness.
