Mary Frances Crawford Fitch, age 97, died Sunday, November 27, 2022 at Scotia Village in Laurinburg, NC.
A memorial service will be held at Scotia Village in MMEC on Sunday, December 11, 2022 at 3:00 pm.
Mary Frances was born on January 23, 1925 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Dr. Baxter L. Crawford and Letty Abell Crawford.
She grew up in Wyncote PA, attended Abington-Friends School in Jenkintown, PA; but moved to Chester, SC when she was a junior in high school and graduated from Chester High School in 1941. She received a BA degree from Winthrop College in 1945. She attended Pres. School of Christian Ed in the fall of 1945-winter 1946.
She married Frank J. Fitch, Jr., in August 1946. They lived in Texas for a year while Frank got his Masters degree at Texas A&M and she worked in the Texas A&M library. They moved to Athens, GA for two years and then to Auburn, AL for five years and then back to Georgia at Rock Eagle 4-H Center, Eatonton, GA for 27 years.
She was a librarian at Uncle Remus Regional Library in Madison, GA for five years then Putnam County High School librarian in Eatonton, GA. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Uncle Remus Woman’s Club.
In Auburn, Eatonton and Athens, she was active in the Presbyterian Church as a Sunday school teacher, circle chairman, and district chairman in Augusta Macon Presbytery. She was an honorary lifetime member of the Women of the Church.
In 1980 at retirement, they moved to Athens, GA where besides her various church activities she was a member of Georgia Conservancy, Sandy Creek Nature Center and delivered Meals on Wheels for a number of years.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of sixty years, Frank W. Fitch, Jr.; beloved daughter, Frances Lettitia (Letty) Fitch; and brother, Baxter L. Crawford, Jr.
She is survived by her sons, Frank W. Fitch, III (Connie Nutt) and Crawford E. Fitch; grandchildren, Nathan Fitch (Sofia) and Gordon Fitch (Noah Fulmer); great granddaughter, Nova Letti; and special friend, Penny Oldfather.
