Margaret Carr Mitchell Baker, 86, passed away Saturday, April 8, 2023 at Scotland Memorial Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 13, 2023 at First United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Ruth Baker Lytch and husband, Keith, both of Laurinburg; and two grandchildren, Margaret “Meggie” Lytch of Goose Creek, SC and Bryce Lytch of Laurinburg. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jack C. Baker of Laurinburg; her parents, Margaret P. Mitchell and John E. Mitchell, Sr.; and her brother, John E. Mitchell, Jr. of Snellville, GA.
She was born September 18, 1936 in Hamlet, NC to Margaret P. Mitchell and John E. Mitchell, Sr.
Margaret had two loves in her life, teaching and her family. She taught 42 years, with her first year being in Hamlet, NC, and ten years at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, NC, while the remaining years were in service to Scotland County Schools in Laurinburg, NC.
She was passionate about teaching and making a difference in young lives. She even had the unique experience of teaching her future son-in-law and contributed greatly to her grandchildren’s education.
She often spoke about her experiences teaching at Fort Bragg and how much she loved having the opportunity to teach children from around the world.
Margaret grew up in the First United Methodist Church watching her mother sing as a soloist and in the choir, while her father ushered.
Even though illnesses later in life made it difficult to attend services, she always listened to the church services on Sunday mornings and kept up with church events.
She was always a very caring, giving and gracious person who was very thankful for her family, life and strong faith.
Memorials are requested for Hospice, PO Box 1033, Laurinburg, NC 28353 or the Humane Society, 1401 West Blvd., Laurinburg, NC 28352.
