Louis "Lou" Henderson Obituary

Louis “Lou” Leonard Henderson, 79, passed away Thursday, May 20, 2021 at Morrison Manor.

A memorial service will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, May 24, 2021 at First Presbyterian Church in Maxton, officiated by Pastor James Merkel.  Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.  Due to COVID-19 restrictions, please wear a mask or face covering and practice social distancing.

He was born near Charleston, SC to the late George Patrick and Louise McLeod Henderson and moved to the Floral College Community near Maxton, NC when he was two years old.  He was a proud Eagle Scout and attended Maxton High School playing every sport available with his talents really shining in basketball and football.  After graduation he attended Gardner Webb and NC State University, remaining a lifelong & dedicated Wolfpack fan.  As the owner of Henderson Produce, he continued his father’s legacy by providing vegetables to the community for 58 years.  He was an avid history buff, he could recite facts from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars and give you the full history of his home place of “Floral College”. Beloved husband, father, and Doc, he will be greatly missed.

He was generous with his time, talents, and treasures – sharing his love for hunting, farming, fellowship and food with all.

He loved traditions and set many that his family cherishes; one of the main ones is the Opening Day of Dove Season.  A multitude of friends and family would come to the family home, serving pork with “Lou’s Famous BBQ Sauce” and his delicious homemade Brunswick Stew.

He cared deeply about his family, friends and community and had a huge generous heart.

For those that knew him, their lives were richer because he was part of it.  A true sportsman, avid hunter and loved to share his passions with everyone.  Always a more the merrier philosophy.

He is survived by his three daughters, Kathy Carter (Chris) of Marietta, GA, Heather DeAngelis (Kiernan) of Holly Springs, and Holly Pilson (Eric) of Wilmington; brothers, George Patrick “Pat” Henderson (Norma) of Southern Pines and Robert McLeod “Mac” Henderson (Linda) of Maxton; grandchildren, Taylor Carter, Louis Carter, Kathleen Carter, Kayleigh Frances DeAngelis and Anna Louise Pilson.  He is preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Kay Greason Henderson.

A visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Sunday, May 23, 2021 at Bumgarner Family Funeral Service and Crematorium.
