As an architect he was dedicated to designing diverse structures, among them the creation of over 200 buildings for churches, Trask Coliseum at UNC Wilmington and the Centennial Club House #8 in Pinehurst, were among his favorites. Holding licenses in both North and South Carolina, he was always known for his keen sense of humor and the ability to achieve a peaceful relationship between owner and contractor.
Membership in the Laurinburg Kiwanis Club and the Laurinburg Jaycees provided him the opportunity for community involvement. The Jaycees chose him as director of the Scotland County Sheltered Workshop which they sponsored until it was absorbed by the county. In the Kiwanis Club he held the long-lasting title of Outings Committee Chairman for his skills at barbecuing pigs using his secret sauces.
Other interests included enjoying a wide range of music resulting in a collection of jazz, rhythm & blues, big bands and bagpipe recordings. He also enjoyed dancing, extensive reading and his Austin Healy sports car.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years Marilyn Adams McVicker of the home; daughters Laurie Rogers and her husband Paul of Laurinburg; three grandsons, Zachary Rogers (Rachael) of Cullowhee, NC, and Garrett Rogers and Nicholas Rogers, both of Laurinburg. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Gerald P. McVicker.
The family will always hold in memory, the daily kind of loving care provided to their “Papa” for his years at Elmcroft. First Health Hospice provided a wonderful medical team that saw him through the latter stages of his illness with gentle palliative care ensuring his comfort.
