Hilda Hughes Lomax, 82, of Laurinburg, NC, died on May 4, 2022. Her passage was painless and peaceful, in the presence of close family, all of whom dearly loved her.
Hilda was born in Asheboro, NC, on June 14th, 1939. (As a young child, her parents, Lena and Lewis, convinced her that Flag Day was all about her birthday.) She was a graduate of Asheboro High School, after which she went on to work at Randolph County Hospital, attaining her CRNA license upon graduating from the Duke University School of Nursing. She later worked at St. Eugene Community Hospital in Dillon, SC, before moving on to Scotland Memorial in Laurinburg, NC.
Beloved by friends, co-workers, and family, Hilda was always a kind and compassionate person. Her expertise in the field of nursing anesthesia was meticulous and she was a consummate care provider. In her off-time, she enjoyed tomato sandwiches, Duke basketball, her pet chickens, and spending time with family and friends--especially at the beach. Lover of lobster tails and all other good food, she spoiled her cousins and nieces, much to the chagrin of their parents.
Hilda was married to her loyal and loving husband, Jerry W. Lomax, who passed away in May of 2021, for over 45 years. She is survived by her son Mac; brother James Calvin Hughes, nieces Sheila Hughes, Rebecca Farlow and husband Dean, step-children Jeff and Joanie Lomax, as well as many step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and grand dog, Bunk.
Memorial services will be shared with close friends and family in the near future.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her name to Hospice Foundation of America (hospicefoundation.org). The donations can be done online or sent to the Hospice Foundation of America at 1707 L St NW #220, Washington, DC 20036.
