David A. Hurley, age 60, passed away Sunday, November 28, 2021 in hospice care at Forrest Oakes Nursing Facility in Albemarle.
Despite spending the past seven plus years in a skilled nursing facility, David led an incredible life! He held many titles during his lifetime: chef, grill master, firefighter, fire chief, business owner, welder, angler, hunter, husband, brother, and father. Most people will remember David for his “helper” personality – there wasn’t a person in the world that he would not go out of his way to help. This tendency came through in all that he did, but especially with his work with the Lake Tillery Volunteer Fire Department where David served six years as the fire chief and a total of ten years of service with the fire department before his health began to decline. As a teenager, he joined the Troy Fire Department and continued serving and volunteering with the fire service until he was no longer able to do so due to his health. He was truly an artist when it came to metal work. For fifteen years, he owned Hurley’s Ornamental Iron Shop where he worked with his son, Aaron, to fabricate custom wrought iron creations for customers along the eastern seaboard — creations that will stand the test of time.
David was born in Troy, NC on March 28, 1961, to Paul and Amy Davis Hurley. He was the youngest brother to three siblings – Gary, Harold, and Evelyn. He is survived by his mother; siblings; caregiver, Elizabeth; two sons, Aaron and Sam; and his grandson, Joshua.
The family will host a firefighter’s service for David at the Lake Tillery Volunteer Fire Department on Saturday, December 4, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. officiated by Chip McCauley. Masks are required for attendance and social distancing is expected. The family will spread David’s ashes based on his wishes in a private ceremony.
