Charles “Charlie” Grier Potts, husband of Mary Kay C. Potts passed away on Monday, September 11, 2023. At the time he was in the Farm House Skilled Care Living at Scotia Village.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 16, 2023 at Scotia Village with Pastor Linda Nelson officiating
Richard Walker Potts, only child of Charlie, is living in Stillwater, OK. The University, where Richard taught and retired was always a point of pride for Charlie.
At the age of two, Charlie and his brother, Jim, moved from Florida to Mecklenburg County to begin their lives with Mr. and Mrs. John Potts. Uncle Johnny and Aunt Winnie were strong and wonderfully kind raising the boys.
Steele Creek Community allowed great friends as well as expected farm chores for the boys. Steele Creek Elementary and Berry Hill High School offered many scholastic and athletic opportunities; Charlie participated well as a scholar and player. He played high school basketball and baseball, especially as a catcher. Softball and basketball continued as an adult.
He enlisted in the US Army and served in Occupied Japan and upon discharge chose Catawba College for an Accounting Degree as well as playing Varsity Baseball and Golf.
Employment with Industrial Electric Company proved to be the right prep for later job offers, as with La Marick Beauty Systems. Eventually opening his own business, Chaz, Inc., he opened eighteen Chaz Salons and they proved to be successful.
Even with his hustle of opening businesses, Charlie was a strong member of Central Steele Creek Presbyterian Church, a Mason and Rotary Club member, member of Carmel Country Club, as an avid and successful golf player. His best golf buddies were called “The Mafia” with their own “Godfather”.
Catawba College benefited from his support as a college friend and later as a faithful member of the Board of Trustees. Writing poems and sometimes eulogies for friend’s birthdays and funerals were pure enjoyment.
On January 20, 2018, Charlie and Mary Kay C. Ollis were married and moved to Scotia Village; there making many new friends and enjoying their lives, too. Charlie enjoyed a loving association with Richard Potts, Bruce and Jane Ollis, Kim and Hans Williamson, and Ron Ollis. Grandchildren and great grandchildren certainly were special to him.
Charlie always had a special place in Merky’s heart and she will always miss him.
