Catherine Seales Hayes Marvin, 88, passed away on Monday, December 6, 2021 at her home.
At her request, as well as the family, a graveside service will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 11, 2021 at the Seales Cemetery (also known as Tabernacle Cemetery), located behind 8560 Tartan Rd., Laurinburg, NC 28352, officiated by Rev. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2022 at the First Baptist Church fellowship hall, 220 N. Main St., McColl, SC. The casual remembrance will begin at 5:00 p.m., with a “Birthday” celebration dinner to follow.
Born September 28, 1933 in Scotland County, she was the daughter of the late James Porter and Lucille Norris Seales. She was a member of First Baptist Church in McColl, SC, where she served as Sunday School Director, W.M.U. Director, Hospitality Director, Deacon, and was a member of the choir. She also volunteered with the Optimist Club and Scotland Memorial Hospital.
She leaves to cherish her memory to her son, Thomas Edward “Blaze” Hayes of Greensboro, NC; her daughter-in-law, Deborah Hayes of Laurinburg; grandchildren, Dana Hayes Cheshire (Chris) of Cary, NC and John Phillip “Phil” Hayes (Molly) of Laurinburg; great grandchildren, Anna Cheshire, Sarah Kate Cheshire, Hollyn Marie Hayes, and John Phillip Hayes IV; extended family, Jimmie Ann Clark of McColl, SC, Denise and Willie Milligan and family of Surfside Beach, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and all who called her “Granny”. She is preceded in death by her husbands, John Phillip “Jack” Hayes and Richard B. “Dick” Marvin, her son, John Phillip Hayes Jr., and her brother, James “Jimmie” Porter Seales Jr.
It would be wrong to say that Granny Catherine lost her battle to blood clots, stroke and even a heart attack because she never stopped fighting for her family. No matter how sick she was, she was always determined. When anyone else would have broken, Granny Catherine stayed strong. Through her, we know what resilience, love, passion and perseverance truly look like.
