Carl W. Atkinson Jr. (Will) 79, passed away Saturday, April 6, 2024, at his home. Will was born August 25, 1944, in Anson County to Carl W and Martha Deese Atkinson.
He was a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill. After graduation, he joined the Marines and did a tour of duty in Vietnam. After Vietnam he entered Wake Forest Law School where he graduated with a Juris Doctorate in 1973. He and his family moved to Troy in 1973 where he began to practice law with Horace McCall. He later formed the partnership of Hollers and Atkinson. During his practice, he served as Town of Troy attorney for 27 years, president of NC Municipal Attorney’s Assoc. in 2006, and received his certificate for completion of 50 years of service as a member of the NC State Bar. He then retired in 2016.
His passion was golf. He was always happy playing golf and being with his “buds.” He made many friends at Twin Valley in Wadesboro, Montgomery Country Club, and mostly at Piney Point in Norwood. He was recently honored with a lifetime membership for his years of dedication, serving as a board member, and as President of the Board of Directors at Piney Point Golf Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Clinton Atkinson and sister, Janice Gray. He is survived by his wife, Faye, of 54 years, his children, Angela Elkins (Mike), Sharon Harkins (John), and Courtney Atkinson (Susan). He is also survived by his grandchildren Adam Elkins (Morgan), Drew Harkins (Lauren), Aaron Elkins (Abby), Matthew Harkins, Katie Elkins, Marin Atkinson, Sam Atkinson, and great grandchildren Whit and Claire Elkins. He is also survived by his brother James Atkinson, along with many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Monday April 8, 2024 at Bumgarner Family Funeral Service from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. Funeral will be held at Troy First Baptist Church at 11:00 am April 9, 2024, officiated by Pastor Nick Allen and Pastor Jim Anderson. Graveside will follow at Southside Cemetery with military honors.
