Winston Henry Tornow, DVM died peacefully at the age of 97 years on Tuesday, July 30, 2012. Win, also known as Pop by his family, will be remembered for his love of international travel, his backyard garden at 315 Prince Street, his fanaticism about his health and exercise, and his parachute jump at the age of 95 years.
Win was born in Wichita, Kansas on February 21, 1916 to William Henry and Rachel Hatfield Tornow. He lived there until he was a young teenager when his family moved to Denver, Colorado. He graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in Veterinary Medicine in 1941. He then served 3 ½ years with the Army Veterinary Corps, and was honorably discharged as Captain. Part of his service was at the Laurinburg-Maxton Air Base. It was during this time he met his future wife, Martha Jane McNair. Win opened his own veterinary practice, Tar Heel Veterinary Hospital, in the late 1940's and operated it for over five decades. He was involved with the Laurinburg Rotary Club (and was named a Paul Harris Fellow,) the Scotland County Board of Health (where he served as chairman,) and various veterinary organizations. He was an active member of Laurinburg Presbyterian Church, served in several capacities there, and was a faithful attendee every Sunday. In his later years he also volunteered with several local non-profit agencies, including Scotia Village, Helping Hands, Hospice of Scotland County, and Scotland Memorial Hospital.
Win was pre-deceased by his wife and by his sister, Harriet Tornow Eastis of Denver, Colorado. He is survived by his sister, Suzanne Tornow Miller of Phoenix, Arizona, and his three children: Winston McNair Tornow (Debi) of Beech Mountain, Jane Ellen Tornow of Chapel Hill, and Elizabeth Tornow Skeadas (John) of Savannah, GA. Survivors also include grandchildren William McNair Tornow (Heather) of Woodstock, GA, Cameron Anne Tornow Holcomb (Bryan) of Greensboro, Jane Lytch Tornow of Houston, TX, William Michael Best (Shawna) of Waxhaw, Tony Galen Clark of Chapel Hill and John Peter Skeadas, III and Ellen McNair Skeadas, both of Savannah, GA; five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church officiated by the Rev. Dr. Neal Carter. Visitation will follow in the church fellowship hall.
Special thanks to the members of his Sunday school class, to Scotia Village nursing and staff, and to Winnie and Frank McRae for the Christian love and support given to him, especially in his final months.
