Mrs. Winston James Guest, 84, of Scotia Village died Tuesday, November 14, at Scotland Memorial Hospital.
A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church officiated by the Rev. Dr. Stan Smith and the Rev. John Cottingham. Burial will precede the service at Hillside Memorial Park.
She is survived by two sons, Ed. Guest and wife, Ann of Hartsville, SC; Fairley Guest and wife, Joy of Laurinburg; a sister, Lillian James Brannon of Greensboro; 3 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
Born April 15, 1922 in Scotland County, she was a daughter of the late Dr. Fairley and Hallie Covington James. She was a graduate of UNC-G with degrees in elementary education and organ. Prior to her marriage in 1944 to Edwin M. "Mack" Guest, Jr., she was the organist for Laurinburg Presbyterian Church.
Winston taught at Central School and Covington Street School in Laurinburg and later served as the librarian at Covington Street School. She was very concerned and involved with the education of the youth in Scotland County, and continued to serve as a substitute teacher after her retirement.
An active member of the First United Methodist Church, she served as a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school pianist, MYF leader, as a member of the Worship Committee and the Administrative Board. She also was a founder of the Laurinburg Junior Service League, served as a Literacy Council tutor, and was a hospice volunteer.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested for the First United Methodist Church, 101 W. Church St., Laurinburg, NC 28352.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m Thursday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium and following the memorial service in the church fellowship hall.
