Willodeen (Dukes) Stewart

Willodeen Dukes Stewart, 94, of Laurinburg, a beloved mother, grandmother, and educator, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2023, at Morrison Manor. Born on November 16, 1928, in Kingstree, South Carolina, she dedicated her life to her family, her students, and her community.

There will be a memorial service at 1:30 pm, Sunday, June 11, 2023 at the Bumgarner Family Funeral Service and Crematorium Chapel with Pastor Bobby Tyson officiating.

Willodeen was a proud graduate of Appalachian State University, where she earned a degree in Economics. Her passion for teaching and sharing her knowledge with young minds led her to a fulfilling career in education. She taught seventh and eighth grades at Sycamore Lane and Washington Park schools. Later, she continued to educate and inspire students as an economics teacher at Laurel Hill High School. Her dedication and commitment to her students left a lasting impact on countless lives. As a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church in Laurinburg, Willodeen found joy and solace in her faith.

She is survived by her son, Randall Stewart (Darlene), of Laurinburg, and her daughter, Cynthia Stewart Pruitt of West Jefferson, North Carolina; her grandson, Phillip Stewart of Laurinburg; and her granddaughter, Erin Hawks, of Monroe, North Carolina. She is preceded in death by her husband, Dan M. Stewart; her son, Daniel Stewart; and her parents, Walter and Garnetta Wyndham Dukes. Willodeen's love for her family was evident in the care and support she provided throughout her life.

In her leisure time, Willodeen was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves baseball team. She enjoyed watching their games and cheering them on. Her love for animals was also evident in the companionship she shared with her three beloved cats.
