William Charles "Sandy" Barrett, III, age 74, passed away Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at Carolinas Medical Center after a brief illness.
A memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 21, at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church. A graveside service with Masonic Rites will precede the service at Hillside Cemetery.
Sandy is survived by his wife, Betsy Snell Barrett; his son, Charles Barrett, IV and wife, Pam of Wilson; his daughters, Lillian Pittroff and husband, Pete of Charlotte and Mary Grace Fisher and husband, Danny of Washington, DC; his brother, Hand Barrett of Colonial Heights, VA; his sister, Beth Lamar of Raleigh; his grandchildren, Peter Pitroff and Bennett Pitroff; and 14 nieces and nephews.
Sandy was born October 29, 1940 in Raleigh, a son of the late W. Charles and Elizabeth James Barrett. He attended public schools in Laurinburg and upon graduation from Laurinburg High School he attended Campbell College.
His early career was with Pioneer Corn, Peoples Bank and later Southern National Bank in Lumberton. After his long time banking career, he returned to college and graduated from UNC-G and began a 10 year career as a middle school science teacher in Guilford County. Upon retirement he and Betsy moved to Charlotte.
Always an interesting person with a good story, Sandy enjoyed reading and broadening his thirst for knowledge, listening intensively to people, and he was affectionate with his family as they enjoyed many outings at his favorite place: Sunset Beach.
In Lumberton he was also a Scout Master for a Boy Scout troop. He was also in the US Army Reserve, the National Guard, and was a Mason.
The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the memorial service.
