William Guy Mcmillan

William Guy McMillan, Sr., 72, died October 14, 2012 after a long period of illness.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday at Old Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Millie Wallace McMillan; his son William Guy, Jr. (wife Misty); and his younger son Major Winston Gabriel McMillan, United States Marine Corps (wife Amy) , three grandchildren, Graham Winston, Morgan Elizabeth, Abigail Leigh; two brothers, James Arthur ( wife Anna) of Laurinburg and John Harold wife (Lynda) of Wagram, NC.

Born in Hamlet, NC, he was the son of the late William Harold and Gladys Adams McMillan. Bill graduated from Wagram High School in l958. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from UNC Charlotte and Master of Education degree from Winthrop College in Rock Hill, SC. He began his teaching career in Clover, South Carolina and in 1972 was designated as the first Career Education Coordinator for the Junior and Senior High Schools in Fort Mill , S.C. In l984, he returned to Scotland County, NC. He taught English and history while coaching football, basketball, and baseball in the Marlboro County Schools in South Carolina. Bill retired from the S.C. education system in l995. Bill later taught history at Flora McDonald Academy in Red Springs, N.C. from 1995 to 1996.

Bill's military career began when he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1958 and serving until 1962. In l975, he joined the U.S. Army Reserves, completed Special Forces training at the age of 35, and was assigned to Charlie Company, 3rd Bn. 11th Group (A), lst Special Forces. He was the recipient of numerous personal and unit awards and decorations to include the Airborne and Special Forces Tabs. In February 1991, Sergeant First Class McMillan was activated in Support of Operation Desert Shield/ Desert Storm. He was assigned to the 418th Civil Affairs Company, 354th Brigade. Bill was assigned to a Civil Affairs Team attached to the 210th Field Artillery Brigade, 7th Corps. The team travelled throughout Kuwait and Iraq. In June l991, Bill was released from active duty and then assigned to US Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command, Fort Bragg, NC. He retired on February 22, 1993 after serving 20 years in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Bill was a dedicated member of Old Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon.

The family will receive friend at the graveside following the service.
