William Guthrie "Bill" Underwood, Jr., age 80, died Saturday, August 22, at his residence.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church officiated by the Rev. Dr. Neal Carter and the Rev. Elizabeth Forester. A graveside service with military honors will be 3:30 p.m. at LaFayette Memorial Park in Fayetteville.
He is survived by his wife, Marti Morgan Underwood; a son, Mitchell Underwood and wife, Lynn of Rocky Mount; a daughter, Billi Wilson and husband, Steve of Oxford; three sisters, Nancy Toll of Chambersburg, PA, Esther Slate of Fayetteville, and Anne Barry of Calabash; 5 grandchildren, Rachel Westall of Wake Forest, Christine Westall of Raleigh, Charles Westall of Creedmoor, Laurel Underwood and Candice Underwood of Rocky Mount. He was predeceased by a brother, Arley Thomas and a sister, Doris McDaniel.
Born November 30, 1928 in Fayetteville, he was a son of the late William G. and Gertrude Cashwell Underwood. He served with the US Navy in the Pacific theater during World War II. He later attend the University of North Carolina and served Springs Mills, J. P. Stevens and Stanley Furniture as and industrial engineer/mechanic for many years.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
