Walter Robert Steinemann

Walter Robert Steinemann, 90, a long time resident of Westchester, NY, passed away March 8, 2013 in Laurinburg, NC.

A memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 30 at the Morris Morgan Room, Scotia Village in Laurinburg.

Walter is survived by his children, Maya Bertschinger (Philipp,) Beatrice Biedermann (Andreas,) Doris Hoehn (Peter,) and Thomas Steinemann (Lucia,) and nine loving grandchildren.

He was born January 20, 1923 to Emil and Marie Steinemann in Meister in Meisterschwanden, Switzerland. He emigrated from Switzerland in 1952 and settled in New York where he began his career as an electrical engineer. On a return trip to Switzerland, he courted and soon wed Lydia Hannah Leuthold, the sister of a close friend. They were married from 1955 until her death in 1986. They raised four children together. Walter later entered into a second marriage to Betty Bornmann Winslow until her death in 2011. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Johanna Geissbuhler.

Walter attended engineering school in Biel, Switzerland. He enjoyed traveling for both work and pleasure, and he and Lydia especially looked forward to time spent with thieri Swiss American friends. Walter became and avid curler and joined the Ardsley Curling Club where he curled for many years. He was a member of South Presbyterian Church in Dobbs Ferry. Later in life he took up golf, and he and Betty spent time in North Carolina playing golf and building a home. There he became a master gardener.
