Walter Johnson

Walter Lee Johnson, 67, of Hamlet passed away Saturday May 11, 2013 at his home.

He was born August 29, 1945 in Richmond County, the son of the late Samuel Walker Johnson and Myrtle Gilbert Johnson.

He graduated from Hamlet High School in 1962. He served in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict. Mr. Johnson was a lifetime member of the VFW and served as the Commander and Quarter Master of the Hamlet VFW Post 7314, member of Hamlet American Legion Post 49, and also former commissioner for the American Legion Post 49 Little League Baseball program and coached various baseball teams. He attended Richmond Technical Institute and received an Associates degree in Criminal Justice and an Associates Degree in Business Administration. He was a retired engineer with Seaboard Coastline and CSX Railroad. Mr. Johnson was a member of First Baptist Church, Hamlet.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Ann Johnson of the home and his beloved dog Cricket. His son Kevin (Melanie) Johnson of Hamlet, Daughters, Melissa (Jamie) Boone and Michele (Billy) Singletary all of Hamlet, his brother Michael Johnson of Laurel Hill, and his sister, Geraldine Brigman of Hamlet. Four grand children Natalie (James) Johnson, Will Reynolds, Jason Johnson, Brooke Johnson, and great grandchild, Harper Johnson.

McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium is serving the family.

A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church in Hamlet at a later date to be determined.
