Laurinburg
V. Margaret Smith, age 92, passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at her home.
She is survived by her son, Michael Aylott (Helen) of Texas; her daughters, Pat Monroe and of Laurinburg and Marilyn Garner (Terry) of Laurinburg; as well as 6 grandchildren.
She was born December 27, 1922 in Hastings, England. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Victor Aylott, a British pilot who was killed in World War II. At the end of the was, she married Edwin Erwin Smith of Laurinburg, who was stationed at the time in England with the United States Army, and who also predeceased her. She left her home in England and came to America 70 years ago with two small children from her first marriage. Her first work was as a nurse at the Scotland Memorial Hospital, when it was still located at the Laurinburg-Maxton Airbase.
A family celebration of her life will be held at a later date, at which her ashes will be deposited in the Atlantic Ocean with the hope that the Gulf stream will carry a few particles back to the English shores from whence she came.
Memorials are requested for the Laurinburg Christian Church, 1111 S. Turnpike Rd., Laurinburg, NC 28352 or Scotland County Humane Society, 1401 West Blvd., Laurinburg, NC.
