Mr. Thomas Jefferson "Tom" Smith, 87, of 1007 Sunset Drive died Tuesday, September 4, at Scotland Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. C. F. McDowell, III. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Annie Laurie Maddox Smith; a brother-in-law, Jack Rushin of Laurinburg; two sisters-in-law, Emma Neal Maddox of Laurinburg and Doris Maddox of Charlotte; a nephew, Jackie Rushin; nieces, Dana Odom, Pat Culp, and Judy Lee; great nieces and nephews, Tommy Grubbs, Chris Culp, Laurie Culp, Heather Lee, and Courtney Lee; seven great-great nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Annie Currie, Grace S. "Tink" Rushin, Georgia Siler, and Louise Smith.

Born June 14, 1920 in Laurinburg, he was the son of the late T. R. and Nellie Inman Smith. Tom served with the US Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. Following the War, he went to work with "The Laurinburg Exchange" in 1946 as a typesetter and shop foreman. He retired in 1985 as their production manager.

Tom was also a Mason and former Lodge Master of Laurinburg Lodge #305. An active member of the First Baptist Church, Tom served the church in numerous capacities and was also a former deacon and member of the Goodwyn-Moore Sunday School Class.

The family will be receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
