Mr. Stephen Alderman McLean, 80, of Laurinburg and formerly of Wagram died Saturday, February 19, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.


Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Montpelier Presbyterian Church officiated by the Rev. Jim Johns. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery.


He is survived by sister, Harriet M. Slaughter of Lumberton; a nephew, Robert Slaughter, III of Wilmington; a niece, Harriet S. Turner of Oakton, VA; first cousins, Dickson McLean, Jr. of Wilmington, William S. McLean of Lumberton, Ann Kirksey Ervin of Morganton, Rowland J. Jones, Jr. and John Purcell Jones of Morehead City, and Daniel Stephen Jones of Clinton.


Born May 29, 1919 he was a son of the late Dr. Allan and Ella Alderman McLean. He graduated from Davidson College in 1940 with a degree in business administration and was also was an all-state member of the Davidson football team. He received a commission as an Ensign in the Navy from the US Naval Academy and served in combat in both the North Atlantic and South Pacific theaters in World War II, rising to the rank of Lt. Commander. He retired from the US Naval Reserve as a Commander and served 20 years in the composite unit of the US Naval Reserve in Lumberton. After the War he managed his family's farms for many years.


Alderman was also a member of the Sons of the Revolution, a member of the Board of Directors of Mill Prong Preservation, and of Montpelier Presbyterian Church where he served as Elder.
