Stennett Graham McLeod, 88, journeyed to her heavenly home on June 29, 2016.
Born July 2, 1927 in Proctorville, NC, she was the daughter, and youngest child, of the late Ippie Purvis and Athesia Powell Graham. She was also preceded in death by: her brothers, Paul Graham and Hal Graham and their wives.
She is survived by: her husband of 59 years, Henry L. McLeod, Jr.; children, Mary Powell Rhodes and husband Bob of Cary, NC, Mack McLeod and wife Rebecca of Hickory, NC, Catherine Gilmore and husband John of Salemburg, NC, and John McLeod of Newport, NC; seven nieces and nephews.
Stennett was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved and cherished her family. “Mama Nett’s” everlasting love and adoration for her five grandchildren will always be a cherished memory for John Daniel Rhodes of Clayton, NC, Sarah Catherine Rhodes of Raleigh, NC, Ian McLeod of Greenville, NC, Morgan McLeod and his fiancée, Alicen Simon, of Johnson City, TN, and William Gilmore and wife Whitney of Durham, NC.
A 1948 graduate of Meredith College, Stennett began her teaching career in Bladenboro, NC and then moved to Laurinburg, NC to teach in the Scotland County school system. After her marriage to Henry on December 18, 1956, she devoted her time and energy to raising their four children but, then resumed her teaching career in Scotland County before eventually retiring.
Until her health began to fail, Stennett was an active and faithful member of First United Methodist Church in Laurinburg. One of her favorite ministries was serving as the pianist for the Ed Guest Men’s Sunday School class as well as a pianist at Westminster Nursing Home, now known as Scottish Pines. Throughout her life, Stennett was also very involved in her children and then her grandchildren’s lives and activities. In her spare time, she loved to crochet, was an avid crossword puzzle solver, and a wonderful listener to both friends and family.
The family expresses its heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to the Scottish Pines Rehabilitation and Nursing Center staff for the loving care they provided to Stennett during the past ten years she was with them. Many thanks also go out to the numerous friends and family who visited her and brightened her day throughout the years.
Stennett Graham McLeod’s life will be remembered and celebrated in a memorial service at First United Methodist Church in Laurinburg on July 6, 2016 at 1:00 pm. Family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall. A private family burial will precede the memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church in Laurinburg or Scotland Regional Hospice.
