Smiley Chavis

Mr. Smiley Chavis of 8841 Hasty Road died Sunday, February 21, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Good News Chapel officiated by the Revs. Charles Oxendine, Cleo Maynor, and Earl Henderson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
He is survived by five sons, Carl Chavis of Aberdeen, Louie Chavis of Charlotte, Martin Chavis of Laurinburg, Randy Chavis of Darlington, SC, Ronnie Chavis of Charlotte; nine daughters, Joyce Bauguess of Charlotte, Ola Cunningham of Alexandria, VA, Elease Faye Hampson of San Antonio, TX, Janice Jones of Wilmington, Kaye Kube of Glendale, AZ, Vonnie Lockman of Greenville, SC, Geraldine McGirt of Scottsdale, AZ, Carmen Sims of Wilmington, and Peggy VanFleet of San Antonio, TX; two sisters, Betty Mae Chavis and Louise Locklear of Laurinburg; 17 foster children, 41 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren, and 17 great great grandchildren.
He was born December 26, 1910 in Richmond County and was a son of the late Jim and Frances Chavis. He was a retired farmer and was retired from grounds maintenance at St. Andews Presbyterian College. He was also an avid gardener.
Visitation will be 7 - 9 p.m. Tuesday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
