Sarah Blackwell McGirt , 90, passed away March 2, 2008 at Morgan Center in Laurinburg. She was the daughter of the late Ellen Day McDonald and Samuel Alexander Blackwell, and was predeceased by her beloved husband of 51 years, Murphy F. McGirt.

She is survived by her daughter, Sarah E. McGirt of Maxton; sons, Dr. Murphy McGirt and wife, Anita of Avon Park, FL; Hal McGirt and wife, Alice of Columbia, SC; and Sam. H. McGirt of Maxton; two brothers, Samuel A, Blackwell, Jr. and Paul L. Blackwell of Fayetteville; nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

In addition to be a loving wife and mother, upon her children reaching adulthood, Mrs. McGirt assisted her husband with the daily operation of McGirt's Plumbing of Maxton. Her hobbies included travel, shell collecting, her and her daughter's numerous pets over the years, and music. She was an accomplished pianist and organist, being self taught and later under the tutelage of Professor John E. Williams of St. Andrews Presbyterian College. She donated her musical talent to help with the children's music ministry of her church.

A service to celebrate the Christian life of Sarah Blackwell McGirt will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Maxton officiated by the Rev. Dr. Robert Dendy. A visitation will follow in the church fellowship hall.
