Mr. Samuel Joseph “Joe” Thomasson, Jr., of Scotia Village died Tuesday, January 15, at Scotland Memorial Hospital.
Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the Laurinburg Presbyterian Church officiated by the Rev. Dr. Neal Carter and the Rev. Elizabeth Forester.
He is survived by a son, S.J. “Sammy” Thomasson, III of Shallotte, NC; two daughters, Carolyn T. Wemyss of Kernersville, NC and Deborah T. Brehony of Vienna, VA: four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Mr. Thomasson was preceded in death by his wife, Helen M. Thomasson.
Born November 28, 1917 in Parkton, NC he was a son of the late Samuel J. Thomasson and Carrie M Thomasson. Mr. Thomasson attended the public schools in his home town, graduating from high school in 1935. He attended Presbyterian Junior College. Joe married Helen Ritchie Munse on March 18, 1939.
Joe worked in Fayetteville with Montgomery Ward for ten years as Assistant Manager and then worked with Fay Block Co. for 28 years. He served in Scouting for over 30 years, and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor available in Scouting. He was a Scout Master at the Hay Street Methodist Church for several years and was instrumental in developing a scout troop at the First Presbyterian Church, serving as Scout Master and also as Cub Master for many years.
Joe loved his church and there are few, if any, positions or duties he has not served in the Presbyterian Church of the United States. He has been a Sunday school teacher in practically all of the various departments, and well known as an excellent Bible teacher. He has been Superintendent of the Sunday school, and for many years was an administrator with the Pioneer or Youth Group.
He was considered to be one of the areas most expert gardening persons. He raised roses, camellias and flowers of all sorts in his garden... He was a member of the Rose Society, the Camellia Club and the Botanical Gardens.

Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Wednesday in the Morris Morgan Room, Scotia Village.
