Mr. Samuel Angus "Sam" McInnis, 80, of 803 Aberdeen Road died Wednesday, May 17, at his home.


Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium Chapel officiated by the Revs. Jim Bumgardener and Jim Johns. Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery.


He is survived by his wife, Betty Thames McInnis; a son, Samuel A. "Mac" McInnis, Jr. of Laurinburg; a daughter, Betty Jo Dennis of Aberdeen; a brother, John David McInnis of Wagram; a sister Sarah Campbell Robbins of Ellerbe, 6 grandchildren, Aaron Spry, Paige McInnis, Austin McInnis, Tyler Dennis, Sarah Dennis, and John Dennis.


Born November 21, 1919 in the Galatia community of Cumberland County, he was a son of the late John David and Sallie Smith McInnis. He was a US Army Air Force veteran of World War II serving in England and was employed by McLaurin-McArthur Chevrolet following the war until 1953. From 1953 until his retirement in 1990 he was a funeral director at McDougald Funeral Home.


Sam was a past president of the Laurinburg Optimist Club, former Optimist of the Year, and a charter member of the Scotland County Rescue Squad.


Memorials may be made to Hospice of Scotland County, PO Box 1033, Laurinburg, NC 28353.


Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.

A Tribute


"Sam," just hearing that name conjures up all types of images:



A loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend



A person who in his own quiet way gave his time and effort to help others, most that will be forever unknown



A man who loved his community



A faithful employee of McDougald Funeral Home, one whom I never considered as an employee, but rather as a teacher, a confidant, a friend, and a second father.



Sam became a part of McDougald Funeral Home when I was just 2 years old. I remember going with him in the old 1948 Chevrolet van to cemeteries all over Scotland County as he and Trush Smith dug graves, put up tents, set up equipment and chairs while tolerating my help. Some of my first words were probably "Hillside," "Caledonia," "Spring Hill," "Smyrna," and so on. All names of local cemeteries.



At the same time Sam was the ambulance driver for Scotland County. More than once I can remember a sheriffa
