Mr. Samuel Lee Carpenter, formerly of Troy, NC, son of the late T.C. and Rosa Covington Carpenter, was born on October 13, 1947, in Montgomery County, North Carolina. He departed this earthly life on Sunday, June 9, 2024, at Kaiser Permanente Vallejo Medical Center in Vallejo, California.
A funeral service will be held Sunday, June 30, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. at Rose of Sharon Church of Christ Apostolic, Inc in Troy. Burial will follow at Freeman Hill Cemetery in Troy. There will be a public viewing Saturday, June 29, 2024 at Bumgarner Family Funeral Service from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Affectionately known as Sam, he attended Peabody School in Troy. In 1965, he joined the Parks Job Corps Center near Pleasanton, CA, where he continued his education and completed his vocational training. Following his time at the job corps, he played semi-pro football for a brief time. Sam began his career with the Department of Transportation in Oakland, CA, where he worked for several years before transitioning to a role as an electrician at UC Berkeley in Berkeley, CA. He retired in 2017.
During his youth in Troy, NC, Sam attended St. Stephens United Church of God. After relocating to Oakland, he attended Elmhurst Methodist Church and served as a Sunday School teacher.
Sam was known for his outspoken nature, his love for family and friends, and his willingness to help others. He enjoyed working on his vehicles, plumbing, attending football games, fishing, playing his guitar, and grilling for his loved ones.
Samuel Lee was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Larry Carpenter, Bishop Jethro Carpenter, and Alvester Carpenter; and his sister, Lillian Carpenter.
He leaves to cherish his memories his partner, Ms. Dorothy Turner of Rodeo, CA; his son, Samuel Carpenter, and his daughter, Krystal Carpenter, both of Oakland, CA; three grandchildren, Shakeel Carpenter, Wayne Tucker, and Danielle Carpenter; three brothers, Minister James Carpenter (Katie) of Troy, Elder Willard Carpenter of Albemarle, and Sarwarii Carpenter (Loretta) of Spring Lake; four sisters, Minister Vanessa McLaurin of Durham, Minister Sharon Young, Evangelist Denise Carpenter, and Naomi Drake (Larry), all of Troy; sisters-in-law, Sarah Carpenter and Audrey Carpenter of Greensboro; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and a very close friend, Mr. Maurice Johnson.
