Funeral Services will be held Friday December 31, at 11:30 AM at First Baptist Church in Laurinburg. The Rev. Larry Coleman and Rev. Jim Bruce will conduct services. Internment will be held in Laurinburg at Hillside Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday night between 7:00-8:30 PM at McDougal Funeral Home.
Born Feb. 20, 1928 in Bladenboro, NC he grew up in Cherryville, NC. Mr. Butler was the son of the late Sam M. Butler and Doris Troutman Butler. His sisters Dorothy B. Rudisill and Jane B. Dellinger preceded him in death. Mr. Butler, a Eagle Scout, was a graduate of Stanton Military School and North Carolina State University.
Mr. Butler, a retired textile executive, began his career in 1950 with Smith Textile Co. in Boston Mass. In 1952, he joined Sam M Butler, Inc. in Charlotte. In 1970, he moved to Laurinburg as Vice President of Sales with Waverly Mills. In 1976, he and his son Chip founded Service Thread Mfg. Company, which has operating facilities in Charlotte and manufacturing in Laurinburg.
Mr. Butler was a former member and Deacon of Myers Park Baptist Church and a member of Carmel Country Club. He was a member of First Baptist Church and former President of Scotch Meadows Country Club and a member of the Rotary Club in Laurinburg.
Mr. Butler enjoyed life and loved people. His joy was contagious.
He is survived by his wife Mary Catherine English Butler, two sons; son Sam M (Chip) Butler, III, his wife Trisha, and son Richard B. Butler and wife Nancy, both of Charlotte, two daughters; Cathy Butler Pullen and husband Steve, and Alison Butler McCormick, both of Laurinburg, and six grand daughters, Brooke and Paige Pullen, Kelsey and Caitlin McCormick and Maggie and Spencer Butler.
Pallbearers will be Claude T. Davis, Ronald G. Miller, John S. Fitch, of Charlotte; Ben R. Rudisill of Gastonia; Reginald Poteat, Ralph J. Parker, Andrew G. Williamson, and Charles G. Buie of Laurinburg.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Scotland County, PO Box 1033, Laurinburg NC 28352, First Baptist Church, 302 E. Church St. Laurinburg, NC 28352.
