Samuel Pinkney "Sam" Burns, III, 82, died Thursday, August 13, at Scotland Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. C. F. McDowell, III. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Howard Burns; a son, Sam P. Burns, IV and wife, Susan of Jacksonville, FL; a daughter, Patricia Luce and husband, John of Millbury, MA; two grandchildren, Brooke Pautsch of Tallahassee, FL and Brett Burns of Melbourne, Australia; three great grandchildren, Katelyn Pautsch, Bryce Pautsch, and Shelby Pautsch. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Kristy Burns in 1973 and Scotty Luce in 1996.
Sam was born May 6, 1927 in Sylacauga, AL to the late Samuel P. Burns, II and Mary Ellen West Burns. He attended Talladega High School where as a student he wrote the school fight song, "Here Come the Fighting Men of Talladega High" that is still used today. Completing all of his high school credits, he left school upon the death of his father and joined the US Navy where he served as a pharmacist assistant. On May 9, 2006, he finally received his long delayed diploma from Talladega High School when they celebrated "Sam Burns Day.".
Sam retired as director of operations for Scottish Food Systems, and following retirement he worked part time at Cypress Creek Golf Course where he enjoyed golf and teaching others to play golf.
An active member of the First Baptist Church, he served as a deacon, on the stewardship committee, and was a former chairman of the church council. He was also a former member and president of the Laurinburg Kiwanis Club.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
