S. W. Blackwelder

Laurinburg

S. W. Blackwelder, 87, died Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church officiated by the Rev. Ralph Brown. Visitation will follow in the fellowship hall.

He is survived by his wife, Patsy Parham Blackwelder; three daughters, Kathy Ragsdale and husband, Murphy of Laurinburg, Ann Hutton and husband, Jim of Mint Hill, and Shirley Godfrey and husband, Ronnie of Laurinburg; four grandchildren, Matt Ragsdale, Amy Hutton, Kathryn Hutton, and Veronica Deak; two great grandchildren, Anna Ragsdale and Madelyn Ragsdale.

Born March 30, 1921 in Scotland County, he was a son of the late Sherrill W. and Grace Torrence Blackwelder. He served with the 3rd Army in World War II in France and later Germany and helped liberate the Dachau concentration camp.

Returning to Laurinburg he was the manager of Bill Adams Esso for many years and was later the shop manager for Wallace Trucking Co. An active member of the First United Methodist church, he was a former treasurer, trustee, Emmaus member, Stephen Minister, and was in the Ed Guest Class since the 1940's. S. W. was also a former store manager for Habitat for Humanity of Scotland County.
