Roland Kenneth Swing, 80, died Sunday, February 22, 2009 at Scotland Memorial Hospital after a long and courageous battle with polio and later complications and medical issues..
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. C. F. McDowell, III and the Rev. Dr. L. D. Kimrey. Burial with Military Rites will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Jane Teal Swing; a son, Kenneth Dwain Swing and wife, Cynthia Sharpe of Bakersville; three daughters, Donna S. Dunn and husband, Thomas of Wendell, Dayle S. Britt and husband, Wesley of Laurinburg, and Dawne S. Gardner and husband, James of Gibson; two brothers, Foil Swing of Welcome and Reece Swing of Landis; four sisters, Duette Smith of Delaware, Caroline Honeycutt of High Point, Nancy Andrus of Summerville, SC, and Adena Wall of Lexington; four grandchildren, Carrie Knight of Laurinburg, Amanda Hudson of Wilson, Kenneth D. Swing of Athens, GA, and Shannon Dunn of Wendell.
Born December 26, 1928 in Davidson County, he was a son of the late Roby and Louise Beck Swing. After graduation from high school, he served in the US Navy from 1948 until 1952. He then attended NC State University and later Cal-Poly Tech in San Luis Obispo, CA. He contracted polio in 1956, after rehab he returned to NC State where he graduated in 1960.
Roland served with the North Carolina Employment Security Commission until he retired in 1993. After retirement he served as a part-time greeter at Wal-Mart. He was also active with the Lions Club of Monroe, NC, American Legion Post 50 where he worked diligently with the baseball team. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and an officer in the Sunday School class.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
