Robert Lee Spencer, 90, passed away Saturday, October 25, 2014.

A memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Rebecca Fowlkes "Becky" Spencer and his sister, Edith "Polly" Gibson.

He is survived by his children, Robert L. Spencer, Jr. (Janet) of Gastonia, Ann Sessler (Mark) of Charlotte, Jim Spencer (Linda) of Whispering Pines, and Vicki Bethea (Mark) of Fuquay-Varina; his brothers, Jesse Spencer (Tot) of Rockingham; and Lindo Spencer of Tarboro; his sister, Mary Williams of Laurinburg; and 10 grandchildren.

Born June 11, 1924 in Hamlet, he was the third child of Walter J. and Laverta Brigman Spencer. He was president of the Hamlet High School Class of 1942, and afterward joined the US Army Air Force for service in the Pacific theater in World War II. He returned home after flying 25 missions, many of them "over the Hump," or over the Himalaya mountains. He later participated in the Flight of Honor to the World War II memorial in Washington.

Bob was a graduate of NC State University and began a career in textiles with Morgan Mills and retired in 1984 from West Point/Stevens. Following his retirement he volunteered as a tutor at Nort Laurinburg Elementary School and at Habitat for Humanity.

His special passion was spending special times with his family and friends, and watching sports – especially his Wolfpack football and basketball. His golf course was his garden, and if you visited him you would leave with the gifts of his labors, and especially his collard plants after the first frost.

Memorials are requested for St. Andrews University, 1700 Dogwood Mile, Laurinburg, NC 28352 or the First United Methodist Church, 101 W. Church St., Laurinburg, NC 28352.

Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Scotia Village and following the memorial service in the church fellowship hall.
