Richard Earl Rhye, 61, passed away Sunday, October 14, 2012.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Central United Methodist Church officiated by the Rev. Robert F. Dean. Burial with military honors will follow in Hillside Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Janelle McArthur Rhye; his mother, Ruby Rhye of Atlanta, GA and formerly of Laurinburg; his sister, Diane Sanford of Atlanta; his brother, Mike Rhye of Melbourne, FL; his beloved dog, Angel, and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Richard was born May 3, 1951 in Laurinburg and was also a son of the late Earl Rhye. He was a 1969 graduate of Scotland High School, a former officer for the Laurinburg Police Department and served for about ten years in the US Air Force.
Using his own life's experiences as examples, Richard was instrumental in helping people turn their lives around and served as a Substance Abuse Program Administrator for the Lumberton Correctional Facility.
Richard was recalled by friends and former classmates as having a great sense of humor and always welcoming and friendly. He never met a stranger.
He enjoyed playing Santa Claus, loved children, and was a dog's best friend.
An active member of Central United Methodist Church, Richard loved singing in the choir and was a member of Sandhills Emmaus.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
