He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Laviner Rhue; his son, The Hon. Born June 19, 1935 in Vanceboro, N.C. he was a son of the late John Emmett and Kathleen Laughinghouse Rhue. He received a full scholarship to the University of North Carolina, but elected to join the US Navy where he was a Korean Conflict and Vietnam war veteran. He remained with the Navy for almost 20 years – retiring as a chief petty officer - before beginning his second life with McKesson Chemical. During that time he graduated at Limestone College in Gaffney, SC as his class valedictorian.

Returning to Scotland County, he was a farmer and began service as a magistrate judge in 1986, serving his preferred night shift. That allowed him the daylight hours to spend with his wife and son. With their help he kept a 5 acre garden growing grapes and produce, most which was given to friends.

He is a recipient of the "Order of the Long Leaf Pine," North Carolina's highest civilian award, and the "Wall of Honor" from the Scotland County Law Enforcement Association.

Memorials are requested for Hospice of Scotland County, PO Box 1033, Laurinburg, NC 28353 or Scotland Memorial Foundation, 500 Lauchwood Dr., Laurinburg, NC 28352.

Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
