Richard “Sonny” Lane Bumgarner, 69, of Seagrove, passed away on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at Duke University Hospital in Durham.
Sonny’s family would like to invite friends and family to a celebration of life service with military rites at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 20, 2018 at his residence, 4273 US Hwy 220 ALT-N, Seagrove, N.C. 27341. Visitation will follow the service.
Born January 30, 1949 in Randolph County, he was a son of the late Ralph and Mannie Renegar Bumgarner. He was owner and operator of Bumgarner Trucking. After enlisting in the Army, he was in field artillery, served two tours in Vietnam and retired as a 1st Sgt. He enjoyed Nascar, sports and country music. Sonny lived life to the fullest and never met a stranger. He always had a smile on his face and was a jokester.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Alice Johnson Bumgarner of the home; daughter, Julie Monica Bumgarner of the home, brother, Gene Bumgarner (Betty) of Asheboro; grandson, Arron Lane Hill (Emily) of Asheboro; granddaughter, Brittiany Lee Hill (Fiancé Jesse Barber) of Asheboro; and great grandchildren, Lilly Elizabeth Hill, Violet Lane Hill, Gracie Leigh Barber and Waylon Lee Garland Barber. He is preceded in death by his siblings, Lucille Bumgarner, Darlene Westmoreland, Francis Hughes, Boots Bumgarner, Bill Bumgarner and Clyde Bumgarner.
