Raymond Allen "Ray" Gates, Sr., 77, of 11621 Purcell Road died Thursday, January 8, at Scotland Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Cox Gates; two sons, Allen Gates and wife, Pat of Laurinburg and Mark Gates of Raleigh; three daughters, Pat Jowers and husband, Wayne of Columbia, SC, Sandra Barber and husband, Clarence of Winston-Salem, and Cathy Lowery and husband, Ray of Laurinburg; two sisters, Evalena Halterman and husband, Ken of Olivia and Ellen Sheaves and husband, James of Sanford; 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
February 14, 1926 in Chatham County, he was a son of the late William L. and Minnie Briggs Gates. Ray was a US Navy veteran of World War II, and was retried as the vice president of Peacock Furniture Company. He was also a charter member of Trinity Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon, elder, and Sunday school superintendent. He was also a member of the Laurinburg Kiwanis Club where he was a former president and played guitar and sang at their annual Country Music Show. Most recently he was a volunteer at Scotland Memorial Hospital and a bailiff for the Scotland County Sheriffa
