Peggy Bandy Newsom, 86, of Troy passed away peacefully Wednesday, November 26, 2025 at her residence.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, November 29, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Troy, with Dr. Robert Nelson officiating. Burial will follow at the First Wesleyan Church Cemetery in Troy. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. in the church fellowship hall prior to the service in the church.
Born October 30, 1939, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late Wade Monroe and Margaret Elizabeth Johnson Bandy. Peggy attended Appalachian State and graduated from King's College of Business. Peggy was a homemaker and devoted her life to her family and friends. An active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Troy, she helped to start the tape ministry, which delivered sermons to shut-ins. Over her lifetime, she became involved in a number of different Christian ministries. She was also a past member of the Troy Mother’s Club.
If you were up early enough, you would see Peggy leading a group of walkers around town with her “walking sticks” in tow at sunrise. Peggy was known for her excellent cooking, especially her fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, country style steak, lollipops, peanut butter balls, turtles, and pound cakes. She orchestrated many homemade taffy-pulling sessions with her family around the holidays. Peggy was humble with a great sense of humor that everyone loved. In addition to cooking, morning walks, and helping those in need, on Friday nights, she could be found playing Shoes and Socks cards with her friends. She enjoyed others and never passed up an opportunity to create a good laugh.
She is survived by daughters, Tracy Garner (Max) of Troy; Charlotte Nunez-Wolff (Miguel) of Boone, and Dana Bandy Nelson (Robert) of Troy; grandchildren Hannah Butler, Sarah Ingram (Ryan), Christian Nelson, Joshua Nelson, Faith Nelson, Owen Garner and Joseph Garner; great-granddaughter, Vivian Ingram; sisters Wanda Bandy Garwood of North Wilkesboro and Kay Bandy Mann (Bob) of Troutman; and numerous nieces and nephews that she loved and spoke about often.
The family would like to express their utmost gratitude for Peggy’s newest family members, the remarkable care givers that loved and cared for her in her later years of life.
