Peggy (Thomas) Haywood

Peggy Thomas Haywood died September 29, 2022, at Autumn Care of Biscoe after a long illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 2, 2022 at Trinity United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. VanLene Nelson. Burial will follow at Southside Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Mrs. Haywood was born on March 22, 1931 in Jackson Springs, NC to Fred and Nora Thomas.  After graduating from West End High School, she attended the Baptist Hospital School of Nursing.  She began her 41-year nursing career at Montgomery Memorial Hospital where she met her husband of 68 years, Richard.  She was the Operating Room Supervisor and was nicknamed “Doodle” by her good friend, Dr. Charles Highsmith.  In 1993, Peggy was named to The Great 100 Nurses of North Carolina for excellence in practice and commitment to the profession of nursing.

Peggy was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Troy where she was actively involved in church functions.  She loved playing bridge and enjoyed daily walks.

She loved her family and is survived by her husband of 68 years, Richard Haywood; one daughter, Beth Walker (John); two grandchildren, Kelley Howell (Brooke) and Hollis Fletcher (Craig); and four great grandchildren, Braelyn, Chandler and Everleigh Howell, and Hayes Fletcher.  She is also survived by a sister, Elizabeth Cole; and a brother, Donald Thomas (Dorothy).  She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Floyd Thomas.
