Mrs. Olis Bullock Stubbs, 87, died Thursday, June 11, 2009 at Scotland Memorial Hospital.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Old Laurel Presbyterian Church officiated by the Rev. Howard Whitehurst assisted by Elder Steve Stutts. Interment will be held at a later date.

She is survived by a daughter. Patricia (Patsy) Stubbs Sturgeon and husband, Al of Waco, TX: one brother, Charles Bullock of Brownsville, KY; one sister, Charity Ann Bledsoe of Scottsdale, KY; two sisters-in-law, Jeanette Stubbs Lamb of Big Bear, CA and Jackie Stubbs of Pensacola, FL; four grandchildren; several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Alexander Stubbs, Sr., and son William Alexander Stubbs, Jr., and infant son, Edwin Lee Stubbs.

Born August 20, 1921 in Sweden, KY, she was a daughter of the late Emmons and Nelpha Winchell Bullock. Mrs. Stubbs began working for Morgan Mills in the early 1950's and retired from J.P. Stevens in 1983.

She had been a loyal member of her beloved Old Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church since 1946. In 1972 Olis Stubbs became the first woman to be ordained as an elder in the Old Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church, where she served actively in that role until ill health took its toll. She continued in the capacity as Elder Emeritus until her death. Olis cherished serving as the Old Laurel Hill Church Historian and as a Sunday School Teacher for over thirty years.

Through the years she acquired many, many wonderful friends and "adopted" children and grandchildren whom she dearly loved and the love was truly reciprocated. Beyond the shadow of a doubt her friends and "adopted family" cared deeply for her and were by her side right to the end. Their generosity, kindness and respect for her exceeded all expectations. There are no words in the English language that could possibly express the gratitude and deep appreciation genuinely felt for all of you.

Memorials may be made to Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church, 15301 McFarland Road, Laurinburg, NC 28352 or the Edwin Morgan Center, 517 Peden Street, Laurinburg, NC 28352, Att: Mary Sandra Taylor.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
