Nona T. Capel, 61, of Yorktown, VA, formerly of Troy, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 22, 2026 at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA.

A Homegoing service will be held Sunday, September 6, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at the Jim Matheny Auditorium at Montgomery Central High School  in Troy, officiated by Bishop Eric Carpenter. Burial will follow at Southside Cemetery in Troy. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. in the school auditorium.

Born September 7, 1964, in Montgomery County, she was a daughter of the late Alvester and Lee Waiters Carpenter. Nona loved the Lord and committed her life to serving and uplifting the name of Jesus.

Nona is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 42 years, Lester Capel of the home; daughters, Latoshia Capel and Paquita Scott; brothers, Alester Carpenter, Steven Carpenter, and Shannon Ward; sister, Pamela Jackson; mother-in-law, Ms. Ada Capel of Biscoe, whom she had a special and loving relationship with; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law; and a huge military family and friends. Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her sisters, Patricia Butler and Angela Waiters.
