Nancy Ross Goldsmith Dendy, 80, died Monday, April28, 2014 at Tartan Place Skilled Nursing, Scotia Village, Laurinburg where she had been lovingly cared for since September, 2013.
She was born Nancy Ross Goldsmith to Dr. Thomas George and Mary Cochrane Goldsmith on July 21, 1933 in Greenville, SC. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Dr. Robert S. Dendy, Sr. of Laurinburg; her children, Laura Dendy of Aberdeen, Thomas G. Dendy and his wife, Andrea of Myrtle Beach, SC, along with granddaughters, Mary Ellen, Anna, and Emma, and Robert S. Dendy, Jr. and his wife, Myra and grandsons, Rob, Lucas, and Aaron of Lynchburg, VA. She is also survived by her sister, Terry Osborne of Mt. Pleasant, SC; a niece and a nephew.
Educated in the public schools in Greenville, she was a Honor graduate of Furman University and earned her graduate degree in counseling from Clemson University. She taught school in Georgia and Virginia and later worked in the mental health field in Oconee and Pickens Counties, SC.
Nancy and her husband have made their life in retirement at Scotia Village for the past 10 years. She was a faithful member of trinity Presbyterian Church when her son, Tom was pastor there, and over the past few years had supported her husband and the congregation at the First Presbyterian Church in Maxton. From 1956 to 2002 the Dendys served churches in Clarkesville, GA, Galax, VA and Seneca, SC.
She loved art, music, literature, history, and her family. She especially liked being able to combine gamily visits with opportunities to learn new things. Quiz Bowl and the Book Mark Club were favorite activities with her friends at Scotia Village.
A memorial service will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday, May 4, at the Morris Morgan center at Scotia Village officiated by Pastor Linda Nelson. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Her ashes will be placed in the Memory Garden at Seneca Presbyterian Church at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Scotia Village Foundation, 2200 Elm Ave., Laurinburg, NC 28352. These gifts help provide long term care for residents who may have outlived their resources.
