Matthew James "Matt" Ellis, 24, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008.

A committal service will be 4:30 p.m. Friday at the St. Luke United Methodist Church columbarium. Memorial services will follow at the church at 5:00 p.m. officiated by the Revs. Jay Winston and James Rupard.

Matt is survived by his mother and step-father, Debra and Carl Ransom of Gibson; his father and step-mother, Jim and June Ellis of Laurinburg; a brother, Andy Monroe of Laurinburg; a sister, Cristen Monroe of Laurinburg, his maternal grandparents, H. B. "Sonny" and Jody Ellis of Bristol, VA; paternal grandmother, Mary Ellis of Laurinburg and the late Ed Ellis.

Born July 16, 1984 in Laurinburg, Matt was active in Optimist League baseball as a youth and graduated from Scotland High School in 2002. In 2004 he graduated from Montgomery Community College with a degree in forestry. He was a former member of the Laurel Hill Volunteer Fire Dept., the Stewartsville Volunteer Fire Dept., the Laurinburg Fire Department and the Southern Pines Fire Department. Most recently he was serving as a a contract fireman in Iraq.

Matt was an avid hunter and enjoyed working during his free time at Cooley's Farm.
Memorials are requested for the Scotland County Firefighters Association, 501 N. Main St., Laurinburg, NC 28352 or Sandhills Emmaus.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m Thursday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium and following the memorial service in the church fellowship hall.
