Master Sergeant George E. Boyer, US Army (retired), passed away peacefully at his residence on Friday, April 17, 2026.
A memorial service with Full Military Honors provided by the US Army, Fort Bragg will be held on Friday, April 24, 2026, at Bumgarner Family Funeral Service and Crematorium. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Born on January 9, 1935, in Terre Haute, Indiana, Master Sgt. Boyer, exemplified dedication, courage, and service throughout his distinguished life.
Master Sgt. Boyer embarked on a military career that spanned over two decades, marked by notable assignments and commendations. His service began with the United States Marine Corps from 1952 to 1955, during which he served in the Korean War from 1953 to 1954. He continued his military commitment with the U.S. Army from 1955 until his retirement in 1976. His overseas postings included Germany (1960–1961) and involvement in the Dominican Republic Expedition (1965–1966). He notably served in Special Forces Special Operations during the Vietnamese War from 1968 to 1971. In addition, Master Sgt. Boyer served with the Multinational Force & Observers in Egypt, Israel, and the Gaza Strip from 1982 to 1983.
Throughout his military tenure, Master Sgt. Boyer earned an array of prestigious awards and decorations. These included the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Master Parachute Badge, Special Forces Tab, Vietnamese Parachute Badge, Bronze Star Medal with V device and two Oak Leaf Clusters, Purple Heart Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and the Army Good Conduct Medal with 5th award device. His commendations further encompass the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal with service star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with one campaign star, Korean Defense Service Medal, Republic of Korean War Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal with seven campaign stars, Vietnamese Campaign Medal with 60 device, Multinational Force & Observers Medal, Cold War Victory Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation, Meritorious Service Unit Citation, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry Unit Citation with gold palm, and the Vietnamese Civic Action First Class Medal.
Following his honorable military retirement, Master Sgt. Boyer applied his skills as an employee of the North Carolina Department of Corrections in Wagram and later with the United International Investigative Service at Fort Bragg. His commitment to service and community was also reflected in his longstanding role as secretary and treasurer of the Scotland County Republican Party. He cherished traveling with his family, embracing each journey as an opportunity to create lasting memories.
Master Sgt. Boyer valued education and personal development. He graduated from Monterey Peninsula College in California and pursued further studies at Campbell College in North Carolina. Additionally, he completed courses in spoken Russian and Private Investigation, underscoring his continual pursuit of knowledge. He was a prolific writer who authored and published 19 novels and was honored with an Editor’s Choice Award for his poetry.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Geneva P. Boyer, who shared his life at their home. They are blessed with a loving daughter, Cindy August of Laurinburg; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. The family bond extends to numerous nieces and nephews, who remember him fondly.
Master Sgt. Boyer was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward M. Boyer, and daughters, Mrs. Debra Boyer-Stubbs and Mrs. Marie Boyer-Dunham.
Master Sergeant Boyer's legacy of valor, steadfastness, and commitment to both country and community leaves an indelible mark. He will be remembered with deep respect and gratitude by all who knew him.
