Mrs. Mary Stewart McGoogan Calhoun, 89, died Friday, January 20, 2009 at her home.

Mrs. Calhoun was born October 27, 1919 to the late Albert Stewart McGoogan and Mary Bowman McGoogan. She grew up in St. Pauls, NC and graduated from Brenau College in Gainesville, GA in 1940 with a degree in music.

Mrs. Calhoun was an accomplished pianist and organist and a dedicated educator. She taught music at Barium Springs Home for Children and in the Lumberton, NC schools before marrying John C. Calhoun in 1943 and later moving to Laurinburg in 1950. She served as organist and choir director at the Presbyterian Church in the Pines for over 40 years. She also taught piano lessons and served as an elementary grade teacher and media specialist in the Laurinburg schools until her retirement in 1980.

Mrs. Calhoun was a longtime member and active in the life of the Church in the Pines where she was honored with lifetime membership in the Women of the Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Caldwell Calhoun, a sister, Frances McGoogan Robinson, and a brother, Duncan Lee McGoogan. She is survived by a daughter, Mary Calhoun Scott and husband, Ronald of Darlington, SC; a son, John Caldwell Calhoun, Jr. of Winston-Salem; sisters, Sarah Louise McNeill of St. Pauls and Anne Hopkins of Garner; a brother, Charles McGoogan of Burlington; two grandchildren, Julie Scott of Columbia, SC and Cal Scott of Darlington, SC.

A memorial service will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday at the Presbyterian Church in the Pines, Laurel Hill. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall immediately following the memorial service. A graveside service for the family will be held at Hillside Cemetery, Laurinburg preceding the memorial service.
