Mary Shaw Hambright, 85, passed peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of October 15, 2026 in Shelby, North Carolina.

Born on August 31, 1941, in Scotland County, she was a daughter of the late William Graham Jr. and Annie Parker Winborne Shaw. Mary grew up on her family’s farm. She graduated from Wagram High and UNC-Chapel Hill School of Nursing. Later, while working, received a Nurse Practitioner degree from East Carolina.

Mary devoted her career to caring for others, spending 29 years with the Scotland County Health Department before retiring in 2005. Her commitment to serving her community extended well beyond her professional life. She volunteered at Church Community Services and was a devoted member of Laurinburg Presbyterian Church for 46 years. She loved singing in the chancel choir and faithfully served on various church committees throughout her membership. In 2019, she moved to be closer to family.

Mary is survived by her two daughters, Margaret and Jane; her three grandchildren, Drew, Holly, and Grayson; and her two great-grandchildren, Elijah and Adalyn; sister, Anne Winborne, and her husband, John; niece and nephews, Catherine, John, Bill, and Shaw; and their families. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Elliott, and Margaret’s husband, Neill.

Her family extends a special thank-you to Hospice/VIA Health Partners of Cleveland County for the love, compassion, and care they provided during the final months of her life.

Mary will be remembered for her lifelong dedication to caring for others, her faithful service to her community and church, and the love she shared for her family.

A private graveside service will be held on November 6, 2026 at Spring Hill Cemetery in Wagram.
