September 8, 1933 — February 8, 2024

Laurinburg

Mary B. Ellis, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2024, at the age of 90, at Scotia Village.

A service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 17, 2024 at Scotia Village, officiated by Pastor Linda Nelson.   Burial will be private.

Born on September 8, 1933, in Scotland County, she was the daughter of the late Angus Bowen and Fodie Strickland Bowen.   Mary spent her working years dedicated to Toastmaster and later warmed the hearts of many as a greeter at Walmart.  Her commitment to her community was evident through her volunteer work at Scotland Memorial Hospital and her role as a charter member of Pleasant View Presbyterian Church, where she nurtured her faith and fellowship. Known for her green thumb, Mary found solace and joy in working in her yard, tending to her flowers.  Mary's home was always a hub of activity and warmth, where visits from friends and family were welcomed.  She was a true people person, whose presence could light up a room.

She is survived by her children, Jim Ellis and his wife, June of Laurel Hill, and Robert Ellis and his wife, Lisa of Ocean Isle; her daughter-in-law, Jenny Ellis of Laurinburg; her grandchildren, Mitchell Ellis and his wife, Melissa of Willis, TX, Michael Ellis and his wife, Suzanne of Laurinburg, and Blake Ellis of Ocean Isle, NC; ten great-grandchildren; her special nieces, Terry Williams and her husband, Mitch of Laurinburg, and Barbara Helms and her husband, Roland of Bessemer City, NC; along with the numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Preceding her in death was her husband of 51 years, Edward Franklin Ellis; her son, Mickey Ellis; her grandchildren, Matt Ellis and Jacob Butler, and her sisters, Julia Byrd and Viola Hardee; and her brother-in-law, Bill Byrd.

Memorials may be made to Pleasant View Presbyterian Church, PO Box 35, Laurinburg, NC 28353.
