Mary Elizabeth Richardson Ashworth, 90, of Scotia Village, died Friday, September 1, 2011.
A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, September 8, in the Morris Morgan Room at Scotia Village. The Revs. Gene Tyson of First United Methodist Church , and Linda Nelson, Lutheran Church of the Living Word, ELKA, will officiate. The family will receive friends in the Morgan Room following the service.
She is survived by a daughter, Beth, and son-in-law, Jerry Jones of Leland, NC, a granddaughter, Julie Jones of Arden, NC, a brother-in-law, John T. Ashworth, of Richmond, VA, two sisters-in-law, Millie L. Richardson of Charlotte, and Ruth A. Varney, of Paradise, Ca. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Robert H. Ashworth, and a brother, John L. Richardson, Jr.
Born February 22, 1921 in Hamlet, she was the daughter of the late John L. and Mamie C. Richardson. She graduated from Hamlet High School, attended Queens College, and later moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked in the Pentagon. She then moved back to NC and worked at Laurinburg-Maxton Air Base, where she met her husband, Robert. They were married in 1945, lived in WVA, Ohio, and then for 43 years in Richmond, Va. They moved to Scotia Village in 2002.
She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, and a loyal friend. Her love of and natural gift of playing piano and organ by ear led her to play for many functions in the churches she served, for family and friends, and at Scotia Village. She was a member of Centenary U. Methodist Church in Richmond for 35 years, and a member of First U. Methodist Church of Laurinburg and the Betsy Sanford Sunday School Class since living in Laurinburg.
