Martha Jane McNair Tornow, 92, died peacefully Friday, December 17, 2010. She lived a life exemplified by Christian faith and friendship, generosity, kindness, and a responsibility to always help others. She was a loving wife, mother and friend to many.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church officiated by the Rev. Dr. Neal Carter, the Rev. Elizabeth Forester, and the Rev. Elizabeth McNair Askew.
Surviving are her husband, Dr. Winston Henry Tornow of Laurinburg; children, Winston McNair Tornow (Debi) of Winston-Salem and Beech Mountain, Jane Ellen Tornow of Chapel Hill, and Elizabeth Tornow Skeadas (Johnny) of Savannah, GA; grandchildren, William McNair Tornow of Atlanta, GA, Cameron Anne Tornow Holcomb (Brian) of Greensboro, Jane Lytch Tornow of Houston, TX, William Michael Best (Shawna) of Waxhaw; Tony Galen Clark of Chapel Hill; John Skeadas, III of Savannah, GA; Ellen McNair Skeadas of Savannah, GA; and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several loving nieces and nephews.
Martha was a daughter of James Lytch and Gertrude McIntosh McNair, and the last surviving of their five children. She was pre-deceased by her older siblings: John Franklin McNair, Jr., Elizabeth McNair Nelson Timberlake, James Lytch McNair, Jr., and Gertrude McIntosh McNair Barnes.
She was born in Laurinburg on August 9, 1918. She grew up in Laurinburg in the house that is now McDougald Funeral Home on East Church Street, and graduated from Laurinburg High School with honors in 1935. She graduated from Salem College in 1939 where she received the Lyceum French medal.
She lived a life devoted to family and friends, and also gave her time and energy and resources to so many deserving local organizations. She was on the original Board of Trustees for Scotia Village, serving for many years, and also served on the Scotia Foundation Board. In 2002 she received the Laurinburg/Scotland County Chamber of Commerce Dunbar/McCoy Quality of Life Award, given for civic mindedness, and for giving of her time and efforts to the community. She served on the Scotland Memorial Foundation Board in 2000-2007. In 2009 the Foundation named their planned giving society as the Fulton-Tornow Society, in honor and appreciation of the generosity and dedication of Hewitt Fulton and Martha Tornow to their community. She is a sustaining member of the Laurinburg Junior Service League.
Visitation will follow the memorial service in the church fellowship hall.
