Marjorie (Boyd) Sewell

Marjorie Boyd Sewell of Laurinburg and Knightdale, was 83 years old and passed away on February 26, 2024.

A graveside ceremony will be held at 2PM on Sunday, March 3rd at Hillside Memorial Park in Laurinburg, NC, officiated by Pastor Ronnie McLean.  Immediately following the service, please join the family for food and fellowship at Bumgarner Family Funeral Service and Crematorium at 305 E. Church Street, Laurinburg, NC.

Marjorie is survived by her four children; Lisa Crabb of Wake Forest, NC, Frank Sewell of Mount Pleasant, SC, Andrew Sewell of Wilmington, NC, and John Sewell of Huntington Valley, PA; and five grandchildren, Katelyn, Sara, Otto, Emily, and Zoe. She is also survived by her sister, Judy Boyd Chavis of Rockingham, NC.  She is preceded in death by her mother, Linnie Catoe Sampson, father, Hutson Boyd, and stepfather, Tracy Sampson.

Marjorie’s love and passion for reading, history, and teaching came early in life. While Marjorie was a senior at Laurinburg High School, she taught for a half day at Covington Street School for Miss Frances Fletcher who was the principal of the school at the time, and she also worked at the local library part-time.

Marjorie went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts in Education and her Master of Arts in Education from UNC-Pembroke.  She taught school for over 30 years and was thrilled to be awarded Teacher of the Year in Scotland County.  This was such a tremendous way to honor her impact on education and the lives of her students. Marjorie retired from South Scotland School in August of 2000.  She then went on to teach part-time in Gibson, NC for the next couple of years before entering full retirement.  During her teaching tenure, she touched the lives of many of her students and some of those impacts are still felt today.

Marjorie was very proud of her children and her grandchildren. She loved to talk about their lives and accomplishments often.

She also donated her time for several years supporting Hospice of Scotland County.
